Hekate and Selene

Selene is the daughter of Heperion and the sister of Helios (Sun) and Ios(twilight). Her name means the one who is beautifully bright, full of light. From her name, the name of Hellas derives and also the name of Helen.

Selene had many children. The mother of Pandion, the first king of Athens was one of her childen, named Pandeia. The Ores(hours) was her children too, but ώρες means the seasons. Their father was Helios.

Pronunciation

In this article I am going to present to you some of the basic rules of pronunciation according to the grammar rules of ancient hellenic language, I have been taught in school.

Erinnyes

Erinnyes or Evmenides are considered to be daughters of Persephone and Plouton or Ether and Gaia or Gaia and Skotos or Night alone. Erinnyes are called when they are on earth and Evmenides when they are on Hades. They were three in number: Alekto, Tisifone and Megaira. They were leaving next to the entrance of Tartaros. They were avenging and revengeful goddesses. They were tough, rigid and adamant.

Kerveros

Kerveros was son of Tyfon and Echidna and the dog of Hades. Plouton put him in front of the gates of Hades as guardian in order not to leave the dead to come out. He was a very wild beast and he had three heads or according to others fifty or one hundred. For hairs he had snakes and his tail was a tail of dragon with a head at the end. His voice was terrific and analogous to his appearance and that's why Hesiodus describe his voice as “chalcophonous” (=with copper voice).

Hermekate

The word “Hermekate” can be found in Papyri Graecae Magicae III. 1-59 and the explanation that is provided by some is that “Hermes and Hekate are perhaps a “natural match,” in any case, due to their similar functions and associations, though their mythology does not often overlap” or that “Hermekate is son of Hekate and Hermes”. Yet any other sources other than PGM cannot be found. In Betz's book, it is written: "the name Hermekate is a combination of Hermes and Hekate".

Priests and Priestesses

In this article are presented the characteristics of the priests of the Gods and the responsibilities of the priest in Eleusinian Mysteries. The Priests of the Gods should be able-bodied, having deep knowledge and venerable so that they inspire reverence and not lough. On the inside, they should be well-educated and adept of the mysteries and every theology because it was their job to teach others the mysteries, how to pray, how to believe and how to do offerings and sacrifices. They had to live a pure bios, be abstemious and sensible. They used to avoid meat and other inimical habits to the health.
