Torches in Hellenic Mythology

One of the most well-known symbols of Goddess Hekate is the torch. Other goddesses and gods have as symbol the torch. Let's see who they are.

Hermekate

The word “Hermekate” can be found in Papyri Graecae Magicae III. 1-59 and the explanation that is provided by some is that “Hermes and Hekate are perhaps a “natural match,” in any case, due to their similar functions and associations, though their mythology does not often overlap” or that “Hermekate is son of Hekate and Hermes”. Yet any other sources other than PGM cannot be found. In Betz's book, it is written: "the name Hermekate is a combination of Hermes and Hekate".

Kerveros

Kerveros was son of Tyfon and Echidna and the dog of Hades. Plouton put him in front of the gates of Hades as guardian in order not to leave the dead to come out. He was a very wild beast and he had three heads or according to others fifty or one hundred. For hairs he had snakes and his tail was a tail of dragon with a head at the end. His voice was terrific and analogous to his appearance and that's why Hesiodus describe his voice as “chalcophonous” (=with copper voice).

Erinnyes

Erinnyes or Evmenides are considered to be daughters of Persephone and Plouton or Ether and Gaia or Gaia and Skotos or Night alone. Erinnyes are called when they are on earth and Evmenides when they are on Hades. They were three in number: Alekto, Tisifone and Megaira. They were leaving next to the entrance of Tartaros. They were avenging and revengeful goddesses. They were tough, rigid and adamant.

Artemis

There are four women known with name Artemis. The first is daughter of Zeus and Persephone, the second one is daughter of Uranos and Phoebe, the third one is daughter οf Dionysos and Demetra and the fourth one that most known is the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Artemis was born in Delos Island one day before her brother Apollo was born. Her name comes from the word “artia” (άρτια) that means “entire” because Artemis was responsible for the people's health. Artemis is the daughter of Leto and Zeus. Leto's parents are titan Koios and Phoebe.

Soul's Journey

Hades is a spacious place in the center of the earth where the people's souls were going after their physical body's death. This place's main rulers are Plouton and Persephone but other gods such as Hermes, Hekate, Fates and Nemesis have power and duties in Hades. There were five rivers:

God Hermes

Hermes, is a God who works well with Hekate. Looking back at the ancient hellenic magick, Hermes and Hecate make a good couple. Let's see who he is...

Prince Erysichthon and Demeter

From the Hymn to Demeter of Kallimachos we will see how the Goddess managed the disrepsectul young prince Erysichthon and what was his ending.

Kallimachos was born in Kyrene in 305 b.C. and he died in Alexandria in 240 b.C. His father was a general. When he was young he lived in Alexandreia, the most important city of philosophy. His teachers were Aratos and Hermocrates. He found a job in the famous library of Alexandreia and he nearly reached the headmaster position. He was a prominent author of reviews and studies. He wrote Pinakes (indexes), a monumental book with all the spiritual treasures that were written in the library. He read and knew a lot of books by heart. In his poetic writings we find Aitia, Epigrammata, Ekale, Iamboi, Hymns etc.

God Plouton

Pluto is the brother of Zeus. He rules the underworld, Hades. Hekate has the power to walk in his realm. They both share the same symbol: keys and they are related to dogs. Hekate and Persephone share some common properties, that's why they were unified in ancient times. Let's see the characteristics of Pluto, the king of the underworld.

Idean Dactyls

Ide is a mountain in Crete. Ide is also a mountain of Troy, the later Frygia of Asia Minor. From those mountains some very clever creatures were born, Idaioi Daktyloi (Ιδαίοι Δάκτυλοι), means fingers of Ide.

The epic poet Phorokides at 6th centrury b.C. wrote a poem about three Witches from Ide. Their names were:

  • Kelmis
  • Damnameneus
  • Alkmon

They worked with a strong metal, called black iron. They made tools from iron. According to the Pario Chroniko, this discovery were made at 1432 b.C.
